Intricate Japanese designs for Vertu's Signature Kissho collection

Vertu phones has revealed a collection of four one-off Signature handsets.

They are decorated using the technique of maki-e on urushi lacquer by Kazumi Murose, a Living National Treasure of Japan - a term for those individuals designated as holders of important intangible cultural properties.

Using a process that dates from the eighth century, this beautiful and complex art has been fully integrated into the build of a Vertu handset.

Created in celebration of the one year anniversary of Vertu?s Ginza flagship store, the Kissho Collection was revealed at an exclusive event in Tokyo and will embark on a nationwide tour of Japan in the coming months.

These four unique phones are a result of two years of close collaboration between the craftspeople and engineers at Vertu and Mr Murose.

These extremely rare works of art were given the name Kissho by Mr Murose, meaning ??good omen?, to bring good luck to the owner of each of the four handsets in the collection.

The Kissho Collection will be sold by private arrangement.

Perry Oosting, President of Vertu said, "Vertu is proud to be able to play a small part in showcasing and breathing new life into the art of maki-e through the marriage of this traditional craft with technology.

"Vertu was established with the vision of producing exquisitely crafted mobile phones using pioneering materials and techniques. In Mr Murose?s work we found many synergies, particularly in his dedication to pushing the boundaries of his art whilst respecting its heritage."

Mr Murose said, ?In Vertu?s product philosophy I found the same values as those of the Japanese traditional craft art of maki-e; those of skilled manufacture, precision and beauty. I hope that this collaboration between the traditional values of craftsmanship and those of technology will be become symbolic of a new age of harmony."

Mr Murose has used traditional Japanese symbols of good omen and good luck, naming and associating each of the handsets with one of the four seasons.

Daigo (Cherry Blossom), Kinko (Brocade), Kikusui (Chrysanthemum) and Nanten (Nandina Domestica) are all deeply rooted in the lives of the Japanese and their quintessential appreciation of the changing seasons.

Each also corresponds to one of the four seasons - spring, summer, autumn, and winter.
