Vertu wants £4,090 for a phone with a dual-core processor and Android 4.2.2

PHONE MAKER FOR THE VERY WELL HEELED Vertu has announced a pricey Android smartphone called the Vertu Constellation.

The Constellation is an entry level phone by Vertu's standards, retailing for around £2,500 less than the eye-wateringly priced Vertu Ti that Vertu launched earlier this year. Priced at £4,090, the Vertu Constellation is not a Nokia 3210, so we'd assume that it would arrive touting the latest and greatest specifications.

Of course, we'd be wrong. In fact, the Vertu Constellation struggles to match the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini and HTC One Mini in terms of features, with the expensive phone featuring a mere 4.3in HD 720p display, a dual-core 1.7GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage and a 13MP camera.

The 'exciting' features don't stop there, as those who hand over £4,090 to get their mitts on the device will also be treated to a 1.3MP front-facing camera, an average 1,800mAh battery and Google's older Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean mobile operating system rather than the latest version.

We jest, of course, so why is the Vertu Constellation so expensive? Probably because the firm has decided to construct the handset out of titanium and wrap it in calf leather, that's why. Let's also not forget the shortcut key on the side of the handset, which is a ruby, and the screen, which is coated with sapphire crystal.

You're also paying for Vertu's personalised services. Unlike with the Ti phone, your £4,090 won't get you a conceirge on demand at your beck and call, but you will get unlimited iPass WiFi, Kaspersky antivirus, an onboard tracking service and encrypted VoIP.

We think at this point we should note that £4,000 will also buy you eight iPhone 5S or Samsung Galaxy S4 handsets, four Macbook Air laptops, or a decent used car.

Still, bundled antivirus software? Excuse us while we go find our chequebook.
